Govt: Connection operators must store 30-day user traffic from Oct 1

MOSCOW, Apr 19 (PRIME) -- The Russian government approved on Thursday rules for connection operators to store user traffic under the data retention law: they will have to fully keep traffic of the previous 30 days from October 1 with a further rise in storage capacities by 15% annually.

“To approve the attached rules of storage by connection operators of text messages of users of connection services, voice information, images, sound, video and other messages of users of connection services. The ruling takes effect from July 1, 2018,” the document reads.

Signed into law by President Vladimir Putin in July 2016, the law obliges connection operators and Internet companies to retain information on content of talks and correspondence of users, including photo, video and sound files during the period of up to six months. The information stored must be handed over to special services upon their demand.

The law was supposed to come into force on July 1, but then its delay was discussed.
